Stigma: having a negative attitude towards others, e.g. mental illness and the people who have them, multiple personality disorder; people don’t believe it when they can’t see it
Labelling Theory: the theory of Becker (1963) once we are labelled with mental illness, it is a label that is impossible to remove. Affects the person for the rest of their life in situations like jobs, relationships and everyday life.
Iatrogenesis: doctor-generated illness. When the doctor gives us too much information which makes us more sick, we look for aspects of our behaviour that match the symptoms that we have been told, we worry about our illness because of things the doctor has said
Self-fulfilling prophecies: a diagnosis, even if untrue, we believe it and can then spiral into the real illness, what we believe, we make happen unconsciously
Institutionalisation: when patients lose their identity and autonomy through the care of the institution, they are not given choices, even once released they are dependent on the institution and cannot life for themselves.
